An interesting case study where technology was applied in several ways to save resources in solving a very complex problem, in a context where you wouldn’t usually think of using these kinds of solutions.","\u003Ch2>Overview\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Barrio 31 is one of the most crowded, insecure, and impoverished areas in Argentina, making a huge contrast as it’s only blocks away from the heart of Buenos Aires.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The government called for competitions to solve this problem, creating a master plan with several parts and stages. I worked alongside a team at \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.voyansi.com\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Voyansi\u003C\u002Fa> (formerly AEC Resource \u002F AEC Lab) on one of them related to facade renovations, infrastructure, and security measures. Also, it included evaluating the state of each home to determine the specific needs of each case.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>This neighborhood \u003Cstrong>grew organically\u003C\u002Fstrong> without planning. \u003Cstrong>6500 homes\u003C\u002Fstrong> needed basic utilities such as \u003Cstrong>water and electricity. Standard methods\u003C\u002Fstrong> required \u003Cstrong>6500+ days\u003C\u002Fstrong> to measure and model all plots.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cblockquote>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>There was a better way!\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\u003Cp>Our measurements took flight with \u003Cstrong>aerial surveys\u003C\u002Fstrong> followed by terrestrial \u003Cstrong>laser scanning\u003C\u002Fstrong>, producing a huge point cloud for the whole neighborhood.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Software automation paired with BIM improved \u003Cstrong>quality\u003C\u002Fstrong> through consistency and error reduction - this is where I contributed to the project. It was a huge endeavor, and together with one colleague we managed and developed the BIM content, custom tools, and dynamo scripts used, at the same time contributing to the modeling and documentation of the actual project. The total number of people working on the project reached 21 at its peak.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The result... \u003Cstrong>100k man-hours\u003C\u002Fstrong> in savings on this project alone.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>Key Needs\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Model Creation\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Capturing both the site’s existing conditions and the enhancements to be done in precise BIM models. QA Automation ensured consistency.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Information exchange\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Construction documents needed to be extracted from the BIM models. Annotations with standard symbols needed to be placed on the drawings to communicate design intent, sometimes with the help of automation.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Quality\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Checklist generation and QC automation for final checks to validate important parametric data.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>Automation\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>I was part of a two-person team envisioning, developing, and maintaining a set of tools that allowed the team to transfer design standards into the model in seconds.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>Integration\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>We started integrating Revit with Excel early on in the project using Dynamo.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>One use case for such integration was performing quantity take-offs. Instead of manual work, a script embedded all the logic required to count for materials needed for each and every parcel.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Starting with an Excel template spreadsheet, these scripts were ran using each parcel's number. A spreadsheet was automatically filled, in a precise way, in a matter of seconds.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>Platform\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cblockquote>\u003Cp>\"As a contractor that bid for a portion of this project, I want to be able to filter information that is useful to my business. If I build roofs, I want to have a roof-facing filtered, interactive dataset”\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\u003Cp>We saw this project as a good opportunity to put our abilities to the test on creating a platform that could:\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cul>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>Increase the reach of our data set\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>Make data more usable to our stakeholders\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>Expand our capabilities of data expression\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\u003Cp>Data is well organized in Revit and Forge around Projects and buildings, but many times use-cases expand beyond managing just those data sets. Users don't care about how the data is structured; they need to see what they want when they want it. Our team did a lot of work around the product, UX, and UI design.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>One important part of the automation that was performed in this project is the QTO's.
